(AWM 128410)

After Fort Solaro fell, another company of the 2/4th Battalion under Captain McCarty, moved further west to deal with four machine-gun posts that had opened fire on the battalion’s positions. As they began to round up the Italians hiding in these tunnels, an Italian officer came forward and advised that their commander was present but would only surrender to an officer. Presently he emerged from the headquarters with the commander of the Italian XXII Corps, General Enrico Petassi Manella, ‘an old man, dignified and quiet, but very tired’.
